I believe that you should think about what you would like to accomplish by learning either yoga or martial arts. If anything you can try both and see which you like more.
In the past I studied Tae Kwon Do and Wing Chun. Currently I study Muay Thai and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. I do so because I would like to fight MMA some day. I study 4-6 times a week. I usually rest on Sundays. There are times when I go more than once a day.
The Brazilian Jiu Jitsu teacher recommends the yoga class to his students after they take his class so that they can improve their flexibility, tone up, and as a way to cool down. I’ve taken yoga and found it very relaxing.
I can’t answer which would be more beneficial because I don’t know what your goals are. If you’re looking for self defense than I would suggest martial arts over yoga. But if you can why not do both?
1/ Stretch and warm up, with kicks
2/ wushu
3/ warm down with yoga.
no. 3 is essential to have a long life, cos no. 2 will strain the heart.
i practice martial arts, is regularly 3X a week, 2 hour classes? probably not, but i love it anyway, plus i do it for my own advancement physically and mentally(still working on the mental part)
what will be more beneficial to you is whatever helps you achieve your goals, not all martial arts are as spiritual as they may seem, some are more practical with more focus on self defense…
You’re talking about two different disciplines. While they may parallel in some aspects like developing core strength, flexibility and mental concentration. They are different in application and one is about using fighting methodology. So you need to figure out what is you want from each. Personally I do both Yoga and martial arts because it’s a natural fit to do so. After hard training in my art, Yoga helps to keep me loose and aids in my recovery. There no real reason why you can’t as well. The benefits of doing both are much better than just the one.
*raises hand* at my last studio i’d practice 5 hours a day, five days a week, at the new one i only get 2 hours 2-3 times a week, its because i live further away < (T_T)>
i practice because it makes me happy, i love the feeling that i can do anything! that i have practiced my form hundreds of times and i have gotten good! that i have worked so hard and i can relish in the skills i have accomplished….. its just something i love
I practice Ninjitsu, and Wing Chun Kung Fu. If you want to practice something just for philosophy, it really depends on the art. There are hundreds of martial arts.
